AN award in memory of murdered policeman Ronan Kerr is to be presented at the Omagh Half Marathon on March 31.

Omagh Harriers AC, which is affiliated with Athletics Northern Ireland, wanted to help remember the 25-year-old and approached his grieving family to seek permission. Not only did mother Nuala think it was a good idea, but she also revealed how the family were intending to take part in the marathon in memory of Ronan.

Nuala, who is originally from Aghadrumsee, will join her family in the run and will be wearing specially-made T-shirts in her son’s memory.

Constable Kerr was killed when a bomb went off underneath his car outside his apartment in Omagh last year. He was on his way to work a shift in Enniskillen, having completed his training in the Erne North Area of Fermanagh.

Nuala has told The Impartial Reporter that her family are still struggling to come to terms with Ronan’s death.

“Ronan was an intelligent, witty fun loving young man with great potential. He loved life and lived it well and always took time to help others. He had a great attitude to life and could always see the positive side to situations. He wasn’t afraid to stand up for what he believed in. He had great physical and mental strength, but a caring, calm and accepting manner. He never took things for granted and always joined in the spirit of things. This award is in the memory of Ronan and the spirit in which he lived his life,” she said.

All money raised on the day will go to “Care for Cancer Omagh”, a charity close to the Kerr family’s hearts.

“We chose this charity as Brian, Ronan’s father passed away with terminal cancer and we as a family valued their support and services,” she said.

For those who wish to run or walk the marathon in Ronans memory, T-shirts are available from family and friends and Care for Cancer, 1 Campsie Place Omagh (Tel: 028 822 465 99. Opening hours: 10am to 3pm Monday-Friday). Sponsor sheets are also available.

Last orders for T-shirts is March 23, and if you register for the marathon before this date you get the cheaper rate.

It costs £17 to enter the half marathon and £5 for the run and walk.

Additional information can be found on the Facebook page: “Running for Roney”.

Ronan Kerr’s anniversary mass will be on March 30 at 8pm, the evening before the marathon.
