A PRIEST and a Dail deputy were among those who tore up household charge registration forms to the cheers of more than 2,000 supporters at a weekend protest.

Fr Brian O Fearraigh and Independent TD Thomas Pringle carried out the ‘symbolic gesture’ at the end of a rally in Letterkenny on Saturday.

Supporters of the priest, a curate in Gaoth Dobhair in the west Donegal Gaeltacht, also tore up dozens of forms before placing them in bags and delivering them to the offices of government representatives in the Oireachtas.

Fr O Fearraigh caused controversy last month when he told Mass-goers in Derrybeg that they shouldn’t pay the €100 tax.

He addressed a large crowd in Market Square in the centre of Letterkenny on Saturday afternoon, urging people to also boycott septic tank registration and water charges.

Mr Pringle, the TD for Donegal South West, said he believed that “the vast majority of people will not pay the household charge”.

He told the rally: “We will be with people every step of the way.”
